A life of faith, family, and love

A Life Well Lived

Some people are remembered for extraordinary accomplishments. Others are remembered because they quietly made the lives of everyone around them better. Sharon belonged to the latter.

Her life was rooted in Christian faith, strengthened by family, and filled with genuine compassion for others. She loved to sing, enjoyed serving wherever she was needed, and found her greatest happiness in encouraging those she loved.

Early Years

Eva “Sharon” Thompson was born on December 15, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Hugh Rolland Thompson and Bertha Mamie (Johnson) Slager. She spent her early childhood in Independence before moving with her family to rural Freeman, Missouri, in 1955.

Sharon grew up alongside her brothers, Delon and Kenneth, and her sister, Connie, in a close-knit home where family, faith, and helping others were everyday values. Those early experiences helped shape the compassionate and caring woman she would become.

A Faith That Guided Her

For Sharon, faith was not simply something she believed—it was the foundation upon which she built her life.

A lifelong member of Drexel Nazarene Church, she later found a loving church home at South Fork Baptist Church. She loved singing with all her heart for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. During the 1980s, she served as a camp counselor at both Nazarene Church Camp and the KC Youth for Christ L-Bar-C Ranch.

Her kindness was never limited to words. It appeared in quiet acts of generosity, encouragement, and compassion for anyone who needed help.

Career and Service

Sharon’s early career included positions with Sears, Roebuck & Company at the Country Club Plaza and the Railway Express Agency in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Following her interest in the beauty industry, she attended cosmetology school and worked as a beautician until retirement. Helping others look and feel their best suited her caring personality and her natural love of people.

Mother and Son

Although Sharon deeply loved her extended family, becoming a mother was one of the defining joys of her life.

Her only son, John Paul Wirsig, remained at the center of her world. Through every season of life, she encouraged him, took pride in him, and treasured the family that grew around him.

Becoming Grandma

If there was one title Sharon treasured above all others, it was Grandma.

Ben, Hyden, and Reagan brought immeasurable joy into her life. She was often found in the front row at musical performances, concerts, plays, festivals, and school events—proudly cheering as her grandsons shone on stage.

Family Above Everything

Family remained Sharon’s greatest source of happiness throughout every stage of her life. She was especially proud of John and his wife, Jamie, and she loved her nieces and nephews as though they were her own.

Whether spending time with siblings, celebrating holidays, visiting with Jamie, or sharing ordinary moments together, Sharon cherished the relationships that surrounded her.

Sharon’s legacy cannot be measured by possessions or titles. It lives on in the faith she shared, the kindness she extended, the love she poured into her family, and the memories she created with those closest to her.

Future generations of the Wirsig and Thompson families may never have the opportunity to meet her personally, but through these photographs, stories, and recordings, they can come to know the woman whose life touched so many.
